I’ve thought about this before and with Valentine’s Day in our very near rear view mirror, I thought it was the perfect time to do a post on non toxic chemical free flower food!
Do you know what’s in conventional flower food? The main ingredient is bleach! So, I researched a way to make your beautiful bouquets last longer without using this harsh chemical.
First, it is highly recommended to trim the stems of your new flowers. This helps them to continue taking in water and prolongs their freshness. The natural bacteria that occurs overtime in your flower’s water can also build up and block the ends of their stems.
Next, a teaspoon of sugar! Flowers naturally produce their own sugar from their leaves, where it is produced during photosynthesis. Sugar helps the flowers maintain their color and fragrance!
Lastly, Flowers need something acidic. This is to maintain the pH balance of the water to be closer of that of the flower cell’s sap. So, next step, I added a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.
And there we go! Non toxic flower food with a few things that are potentially already in your home!
Let me know if you try it out! Happy Friday!
