First off, what is Collagen?
Collagen is THE most abundant protein in the body. It is a long-chain amino acid composed of: Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine and is naturally found in animal tissue, notably bones and connective tissue. This protein is what is responsible for elasticity in your skin, strength in your horse and the connective tissue that holds everything “in place”.
Collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in your body, and 70% of it in your skin! This natural collagen declines with age and lifestyle (stress, diet, etc).
What are the benefits of Collagen for your skin?
Although beneficial to the whole body, collagen is extremely beneficial to the skin. As a person ages, the outer layer of the skin starts to thin and lose elasticity, known as elastosis. As this happens, more signs of aging and wrinkles occur.
Studies have shown that women who took collagen regularly for 8 weeks saw a 20% reduction in wrinkles! This means that the supplemental collagen can indeed help the body improve its own production processes over time. This also means that collagen consumption can increase the moisture and elasticity in skin, slowing down the aging process.
While collagen is offered in beauty treatments, shampoos, etc. the true benefit on collagen is in consumption, not by topical use.
How about other benefits?
Overtime, collagen has shown to be beneficial to bones and joints in the same was as it is for the skin. Helping production of collagen can improve bone and joint health with consistent consumption, as well as joint pain.
The specific amino acids in collagen also helps to the support and balance the body’s natural hormone production.
It also helps coat the digestive tract and improve digestion.
